Barbicide is a professional-grade disinfectant used in barbershops, salons, and spas to sanitize tools like combs, scissors, clippers, and razors.
It’s the iconic blue liquid in a glass jar you often see at barber stations.
What it does
Barbicide is designed to kill and prevent the spread of germs and pathogens on non-porous tools. It is EPA-registered and works as a:
- Disinfectant
- Virucide (helps kill viruses)
- Fungicide (helps kill fungus)
- Bactericide (kills bacteria)
It’s commonly used to disinfect:
- Clippers and trimmer attachments
- Scissors and shears
- Combs and brushes
- Metal barber tools
How it’s used
Barbicide is a concentrate that gets mixed with water (usually in a disinfecting jar):
- Tools are fully submerged after cleaning
- They typically need to soak for a set contact time (often around 10 minutes depending on label instructions and regulations)
- Solution is changed regularly in busy shops
Why barbers use it
- Trusted industry standard since the 1940s
- Helps meet state board sanitation requirements
- Prevents cross-contamination between clients
- Contains anti-rust properties to protect expensive tools
Important note (barber reality)
Barbicide disinfects, but it does not clean hair, oil, or debris first—so tools should always be:
- Cleaned (brush/wash hair off first)
- Then disinfected in Barbicide
- Then dried and often oiled (especially blades)
